This one is for all the music lovers. JBL presents a small but powerful portable wireless ( Near Field Communication- NFC & Bluetooth) speaker with a Qi wireless charging pad, designed especially for Nokia mobile phone.
JBL PowerUp wireless charging speaker can easily be placed in your bedroom, kitchen or any other corner of your house. We would call it a “desk speaker”. It cannot be called portable as it needs a power supply. It is one of the accessories from Nokia for its Lumia phone series. Needless to say, the compatibility of the speaker and the Lumia series phones is excellent; however, it is also compatible with other smart phones as it uses bluetooth technology.
Connectivity wise, if you have a Near Field Connectivity (NFC) enabled Nokia Lumia 920 or any other windows phone, then bluetooth connectivity is not required. Just place the phone on top of the speaker and you will hear a “low” sound indicating that the connection is established using NFC. If not NFC, then any device like iPod, iPad, any smart phone using Bluetooth device can easily be connected to play the music wirelessly. As tested, the bluetooth connectivity range is visibly good; meaning the speaker and bluetooth mobile device can be in different rooms and still have good unbreakable connection.
As they are NFC enabled, the phone functions can be used while it is charging and you can also play, pause and perform other music functions on the phone. The control of music functions such as play, pause, previous, next, and volume control can be done using the buttons on the top front of the speaker. This is possible using bluetooth technology – so it works if the device is placed on top of the speaker or even if it is away from it. If nothing works, then you can connect the audio cable from your iPod, iPad directly to the audio input slot at the back of the speaker.
Anyone who uses Nokia Lumia windows smart phone is aware about the wireless charging capability (Of course you will need a special wireless charging phone case which can receive power from the speaker and charge the phone). Just place a Lumia phone on top of the speaker, you will be able to see 4 curves getting lit up indicating the place where you need to place the phone for charging. The NOKIA symbol on the top helps to align the phone in correct position for efficient charging.
The wireless charging is Qi enabled. Thus, any phone that has a Qi enabled wireless charging case, can effortlessly be charged by placing the phone on the speaker. It works very well with Nexus, Samsung, HTC phone as well.
Though we are not sure of the sound quality, we can vouch that the sound output is good enough for all kind of music lovers (In fact, it is great to see such superior sound quality from a small sized bluetooth speaker).
People do complain that the sound output is tuned more towards Bass, but honestly we didn’t find that. Moreover, if you feel the bass is heavy, put a piece of filter foam in one of the 2 holes behind the speaker.
If you are worried about the phone sliding out of the position and falling off when the speaker is at its highest volume then you need not worry – the small NOKIA symbol that is seen on top of the speaker is rubberized well to hold the phone from falling.
Overall, what makes the JBL POWERUP WIRELESS CHARGING SPEAKER unique is its multimode functions to charge a Qi enabled smart phones and provide quality sound. With a price of just below $300 it is a great gadget to have.
